Approximentally 2000 babies are born to incarcrated mothers each year. Of the 219,000 female prisoners in the US, around 25% are pregnant or have a childd under a year old.Within 48 hours of giving birth, women return to prison without their infants usually putting strain on family ties and their mental health.
