Maybe I’m too hard on him, but I don’t think so.
It’s hard to grow up without a father around, but when he got out, he was a constant disappointment. It’s confusing. He really had no interest in me, after I cried wishing he would come home. It was all a fantasy, I guess. When he missed my track meet, I wised up. I’m just so glad that I can look forward instead of looking back. I’m so grateful for the things that have come my way. I got a track scholarship to the University of Arkansas, not a full ride, but Stand a Chance made it a solid package AND I have got a spot on the track team. Arkansas is well-known for their winning teams—-both men and women. Hands down, they usually win the national championships in indoor, outdoor, and cross-country events. Consequently, they constantly produce top-tier Olympians, which is what I’m hoping and praying for. That would be so cool.
My involvement in sports has helped me look forward to the future, instead of dwelling on my dad’s drama. There have been times when I felt so depressed and alone. My teammates help, but what really helps is running. It’s been my escape. I just run hard and keep going until the negative feelings vanish. I listen to my music with my earbuds and just GO. But hey, it’s turning out to be my ticket. Oh, and I can’t wait to get on their world famous track, The Randal Tyson Track Center where the NCAA Championships are held. Everybody talks about that track field and how amazing it is. The call it the Track Capital of the World.
